Marco,
As you say, it must be sensible to shield a spectro/colorimeter from strong
light sources during measurement of the white tile or the actual target. Not
only might strong stray light enter the small gap between spectro and paper,
but the strong stray light will enter the paper and be reflected back up at
various angles, possibly affecting the readings. The fact that some use
several layers of the same backing paper, instead of the standard black
background, under the target while reading it, shows that light penetrates
several layers of paper and gets reflected back up and influences the result
from the upper sheet.
So I always read targets in a dim light, and shield the spectro/tile during
calibration.
Bob Frost.

I too am starting to think that that is an important caution. Possibly,
it's
even better to have something like a black cloth (like the ones used for
view cameras) completely to cover the spectrophotometer during calibration
on the white tile.
