It's a larger space, Adobe bundles it in Camera Raw, and Kodak brand recognition. The downsides aren't really particularly severe; occasional banding in 8-bit images is about the worst of it, and even then I can't say I've ever encountered it in a well-exposed shot. I'm sure someone has.
I have no idea how those other graphs are generated or what the crossing lines signify. The person who wrote the software will have to answer that.
I also have no idea where all those exclamation points came from in my previous post. I'll blame net gremlins.
