I have been on this list for a while, but I have a question to put to
the group. I'm not sure if anyone ever tries to compress ICC profiles,
but you'll notice that they don't compress very much. This is probably
due to the tabular nature of the file format. I was wondering if anyone
out there has any pointers to compression code or licensable libraries
that will compress ICC profiles really, really well.
Yes, ICC profiles don't compress very well. The usual way of getting
them to take up less space is to use smaller LUTs (you could think
of this as "lossy compression"). I remember sketching out some ideas
on how to make ICC profiles more compressible a few years ago, by
taking advantage of knowing the nature of the tables, but I've
never heard of anyone creating a means to actually do this. Getting
the best possible compression is probably a rather open ended research
project.
