Previous Post...
Can anyone comment on the spectro(s) they use to profile canvas - other
than
the Spectrolino/SpectroScan? I'm looking for something faster. What do
you
use and what do you like, not like about it.
Looking at the thickness of a couple of canvas stocks, they tend to be
in
the range of 19 mil. My DTP70 manual says it can only handle up to .36
mm
(14 mil). The iCColor spec sheet says it can handle up to 0.4 mm (16
mil).
So it looks like both of those are out.
Response...
We use the ICColor for our 22 mil canvas -- works just fine. We tried
the DTP70 extensively (Xrite's development lab tried it, that is) and
said that it would not work, and could not be modified (read shimmed) to
work.
We read our charts with Gmbeth measuretool, then import into Monaco
Profiler. With the ICColor, you must remove the back plate, and mount
the ICColor on a platform so that the chart hangs freely out the front,
and hangs freely out the back. Otherwise the force of pushing the chart
against a surface can cause it to twist in the machine (error while
reading). Ours are mounted on a shelf that is about 8 inches from the
wall...we have a trash can beneath, and they fall in when they are done!
As for accuracy, with canvas weave, you are at the mercy of the canvas
weave. To get the most accurate profiles, you would need to read 2
charts and average them (not just read a chart twice) to get more
accurate data. However, we have not found sufficient benefit to justify
the effort.
