Hi Mark.
There is definitely a bug in CS2 that causes the numbers in Lab to drift somewhat. (In previous versions of Photoshop the numbers were entered correctly.) If, for example, you are trying to create a solid patch with the Foreground values L* 100, a* 127, b* 85, then fill a document's canvas with that color (either Option-Delete; or select an area, then Option-Delete; or Shift-Delete and fill with foreground), it will read L* 100, a* 126, b* 84. Off by a bit, but off.
But here's the killer:
In that same document, add a Solid Color adjustment layer: that layer will automatically be filled with the Foreground color, and the values will be correct (L* 100, a* 127, b* 85).
Now, here comes the interesting bit: turn off the Solid Color adjustment layer (don't delete it: leave it there, but just turn it OFF), then fill another normal layer in that same image file with the foreground color. Ta-da! he color values will now be correct!
Go figure... but at least there is a workaround: keep a Solid Color adjustment layer in the file until you're finished, then delete it when you're finished. Beats me why this is so (possibly it forces a "reset" in some internal mechanism), but it works, and that's all I care about.
Regards.
