In either case the Kelvin scale is pretty crude and rarely provides the control necessary for an excellent paper white match. Geeking around with the CIE x and y coordinates can do the trick. Color Eyes Display gives you the best control over paper white color with it's manual white point adjustment tool. Anyone who is frustrated with a poor paper white match should try using this feature.
You can also do this in EyeOne Match 3.6 (measure the white of the booth as well as the paper). Been in ProfileMaker Pro for awhile.
Sure EOM3.6 finally has CIE x and y adjustments but no application comes close to Color Eyes Display's (CED) manual white point adjustment that let's you select a point on a grainger-like rainbow and simultaneously see the effect on the display. Most people that use CED don't even know about this feature. If you haven't seen it before you really owe it to yourself to check it out.
The CED demo can be downloaded from www.integrated-color.com. After you've run through the whole calibration and profiling procedure, choose "Review Current Profile" from the main window. Then select "White Point Adjustment" and move the crosshair in the color picker while comparing the whites onscreen to white paper under your viewing lights. I don't like to make radical adjustments here so I think it's important to start with a profile whose white point is fairly close (within about 600K). For those that have a keen eye for color this type of fine tuning can be very beneficial and satisfying.
