Peter,
I have done it many times with white paper (switching
between daylight, near a window, and tungsten, or between
SoLux D50 and tungsten, etc.), and yes I do see a "color",
until I get adapted (within a few seconds). If you "go
outside" as you mention, the adaptation is probably done
before you realize it!
BTW, in many regions of the world you could go out during
the day and get all the moonshine you want!

grey balance strips -
go outside see if u can see any colour in the grey
balance and then come
inside and see the colour change
