Because if it does not do any dithering, it introduces some error that
though small, it would be better not to have.
It's 8-bit. Here's a sample of a 20 step linearization
(5..10..25..20..) where I imported the TIFF into ColorLab and saved
as text...

Not sure what happens if you create your own custom reference file as
I tend to stick to 8-bit values when I build a custom chart.
