Mmm.... I believe Peter's arguments to be quite sound.
BUT... could it be that L* benefits the end result, when the monitor
profile is an 8-bit LUT type?
Because the profile is built after the calibration (video card LUTs),
you'd have a very nice correspondence between input side (PCS = Lab)
and the output side (calibrated RGB to be sent to the video card
LUTs), minimizing the quantization loss of an 8-bit profile.
I have no idea if monitor calibration apps build 8-bit or 16-bit LUT
profiles, though... in 16-bit it shouldn't matter at all, in fact the
precision of a 16-bit profile should take care of linearity better
than any video-card LUT, and then maybe it would be better NOT to
calibrate the monitor in advance except for analog gains (dark point,
white point, maybe a gamma).
