Hi Marco and Oliver,

I just upgraded to ColorThink Pro. I also assumed Prophoto encompassed Adobe RGB. I just quickly viewed a 3D comparison of Adobe RGB 1998 and Prophoto RGB and found that Prophoto did "encompass" Adobe RGB 1998. I went back and looked at both in Colorthink 2.1.2 on my Mac, and Prophoto did not encompass Adobe RGB as Marco noted.

Hi Marco,

Thanks for this reply. I agree nothing can really be taken for granted.
Meanwhile, I use X-RITE ColorGamut usually to check on gamuts : the view in
it shows that Prophoto is "larger" in all ways than AdobeRGB, and
encompasses it all. This added to "common acceptance" about Prophoto puzzles
me. I have found a possible explanation in the need to adap white point
(Prophoto is D50 while Adobe RGB is D65), but I believe the graph would not
show the way it does : it would be a more "total gamut shift" (to express it
the best I can).

Best regards.

I have checked this page :

It shows Adobe RGB is wider in some L* than Prophoto. I downloaded the
applet, tested and found the same.
I have always believed Prophoto is wider in any cases.
Your thoughts ?

Hi Olivier.

When people refer to ProPhoto RGB as a wide-gamut space, one tends to
think
that since it's purported to be "larger than AdobeRGB", it must
*encompass*
it all the way around. That assumption is incorrect: there is a relatively
small but noticeable range of cyans and purples in AdobeRGB that falls
outside the gamut of ProPhoto RGB.

As it is also incorrect to say that "RGB is larger than CMYK", when in
fact
there are colors achievable in even a reasonably common color space like
US
Web Coated (SWOP) v2 that are outside the gamut of sRGB and of most
displays
(precisely, a certain range of greens and cyans).

I think it's always best not to take statements like those at face value,
and instead use utilities like ColorThink to examine for oneself how these
color spaces are shaped and really work.

Regards.
