I, too, have wondered about this topic and been a bit frustrated, for example, at the difference between how Shake manages color vs. Final Cut, since we use both. My sense is that this is the next step for ColorSync, et. al.
I did notice that at the Digital Cinema Summit conference at NAB, they are going to be discussing color with digital motion stuff. I think the title itself is a clue as to where the industry is on this.
