My two cents to Liz,
In the vein of Peter Leyland's post... CMYK has always
been a device dependent (unique to what it is printing
on) color medium and requires specific data to make
optimal color spearations. Guessing is risky and
difficult.
Color management can be looked at as a partnership
between source (designer/client) and destination
(printer) parties. Those who supply images should
supply properly digitized, color managed images in a
device independent format which is digital RGB.
The printer should be able to take any properly
digitized RGB image and convert it to a CMYK image
that will look as similar as possible on their
printing device. (and prepress proof.)
If the source files are not properly color managed to
digitally match the desired color appearance, then the
client should expect additional time and color
correction costs. The client may have to have the
printer do the image digitizing.
If the printer does not properly convert the client
images to optimal CMYK for their printing conditions,
the outcome will lack color fidelity and may result in
extra time and cost to achieve the quality the client
requires.
Bottom line: If you supply sub-par images, quality
will suffer unless you pay extra to color correct the
files. If your printer cannot properly convert color
correct images to matching CMYK, then you should not
use them. The price versus quality factors can become
unacceptable.
Proper color management from both parties can deliver
the best image quality no matter where you get it
printed, nationally or internationally. If one side
cannot hold up their end, the process suffers.
