I have been running Pantone's Colorvantage Inks in an Epson 9600UC, with
Matte Black ink. The inks are not good, at all. They CERTAINLY are not of a
larger gamut then the Epson inks. I can compare identical linearization's
and profiles for the same media and same rip/settings. All the marketing
hype is just that; Marketing -- it worked; they got me to byte. The Epsons
ultrachromes are just shy of matching hexachrome primary lab values. I
figured the Pantones with there 'Larger Gamut then OEM inks' would get me
all the way there. Not! For every ink the dmax is lower or the same (on
most inks lower)
I thought they would at least, have a stronger yellow; Not.
Anyway, I was going to contend with the slight savings and switch back to
the Epson Matte Black and keep the rest. (Pantones matte black can't hold a
candle to the Epson's)
Today I ran out of Light Magenta and called the Big company I purchased the
set from (I got Photo and Matte black). to my TOTAL disbelief, the guy said
we don't carry the Light Magenta.
Epson, I apologize. I just ordered a full set of Ultrachromes and will
NEVER do this again.
I thought the worst thing to look out for is maybe inconsistent batches.
This is not to say that the inks can not be gotten but the LAST thing
anyone wants to do is HUNT down ink when you really need it. At least the
Ultrachromes are everywhere (including your neighbors that will let you
purchase one off of them)
Beware of dealers selling the Replacement sets but not [all] the individual
carts.
All-in-All I was disappointed with the reduced gamut. But more so, the ink
is very sloppy in its lay down. not nearly as tight as the Ultrachormes.
The Epson inks marry so much better to the paper.
