Hi Kamil.
I make the bulk of my living from freelance graphic design production, which
means that I often work at my clients' site using their equipment.
Some of these clients still use CRTs, like the one I am working for
currently, for example. I must say, with complete honesty, that I do
experience eye fatigue and, often enough, headaches when working with CRTs,
whereas that doesn't happen when I work with LCD displays.
Whether it's because of the radiation emanating from the cathodic tubes, or
whatever else is in CRTs that is not in LCDs, fact is that CRTs give me far
more personal trouble than LCDs, generally speaking.
Also, my clients usually allow me to calibrate and profile their LCD
displays at no extra charge, just so that I can work with them more
reliably. Usually, I set the luminance anywhere between 120 and 140 cd/m2,
depending on the ambient brightness. These levels of display luminance --
which you mention as possibly "painful" -- are not causing in me any strain
and fatigue, and certainly none similar to what I experience with CRTs.
Another definite problem with CRTs, in my view, is their lower sharpness
compared to LCDs, which causes eye strain from repeated attempts at
focusing.
Of course, all of these are my opinions and represent my personal
experience, and I don't mean to speak for others who may disagree. I would
be interested in hearing from those who have had experiences different from
mine.
Best regards.
