For the purposes of sharpening, both seem rather odd (well unnecessary).
If I'm targeting an image for CMYK, I convert to that color space (size the
file) and then sharpen anyway. If I'm in RGB, assuming the idea was to
sharpen luminosity, I'd just use the Fade command in Photoshop set to that
mode, not convert to LAB.
