Thanks to everyone for your feedback.

This is probably good advice but I wonder, though this kind of profile may
zap a target into shape does that necessarily mean it’s accurately
characterizing the full range of a device’s spectral response. For example
wouldn’t it be fair to say that if the camera’s sensitivity extended beyond
Adobe 1998 in any direction, any advantage that Prophoto may have offered
( had the camera data been assigned a custom profile and directly converted
to Prophoto) would be lost, even if the file ends up in Prophoto after a
final conversion through a second input profile? Further ( perhaps you can
help us with this too) one of my colleagues who is examining these “in
camera” forced conversions closely using colorthink, believes these
conversions use perceptive rendering. Is this possible, and if so wouldn’t
it also be true that the file data being profiled, though it may be twisted
to conform to a colour target would be little better than any constant but
arbitrary starting point?

We assign a camera profile to the raw data.
Can I ask you how are you producing the untagged tif file for profiling?
Since raw format cant be profiled I am assuming that you mean that you
assign a camera profile to the tif file after raw conversion or you are
using a raw converter such as Phase One Capture that allows for third party
profiles to be assigned during conversion.

Do you know you if this means that they are using third party raw converter
software to produce the untagged tif files needed to create the custom
profile? If so can I ask you which?. I spent some time looking for such
software a while back and found only one ( Bibble ) that produced a truly
untagged tif. Others like Phase One Capture offer a “no colour correction”
option which is actually an icc profile. ( most likely this is simply an
assigned profile which can be stripped off ).
This paper analyzes several of the most common digital camera profiling
packages to discover how well they reproduce color.
Does your paper touch on producing untagged tif files from RAW conversions?
If so is it available on line?
Thanks for your help
