I'm not certain, but I don't think today's printers have larger gamut than those of say five, six or even ten years ago. The major improvement has been the introduction of wide gamut inks that are also long lasting. The older dye printers had exceptional gamut, but the results were not very stable. Pigments at that time were quite dull and even today's pigments are still not as bright as their dye cousins. The whole question than must revolve around the question of longevity and not just gamut. The widest gamut for the longest lasting ink won't be the widest gamut of all.
