Title: Re: ColorBurst RIP update
“Since XRite's linearization is chroma based you'll still want to have a UV filter for the best results”. Can you explain? If I have an EyeOne Pro (not the UV cut) I could linearize with that and then use it to make the profiles, no? The issue I had with Colorburst when I looked at it earlier this year (Feb) was that the built in Monaco profiling engine could not be used with the EyeOne and so while I could relinearize with the i1 their profiles would be “inconsistent” still because my i1 was not a UV cut device. Now with the ability to both linearize and profile with the i1 that issue should have gone away. Interestingly, though, when I asked Colorburst at the time why they went down the hardware route for UV compensation rather than the software rout (eg PM5) they responded:
“One reason is that the software approach to compensating for UV brighteners is only applied to the Perceptual rendering intent. Some images produce better color when using the Relative Colorimetric rendering intent – they would not benefit from the software approach. In a proofing workflow that needs to use Absolute Colorimetric rendering intent (which simulates paper white), the software approach would also be useless. We found the hardware approach to be just as effective with greater flexibility.”
Does anyone have views on this?
Regards
Steve

I just learned that the upcoming ColorBurst 4.2 release with bring linearization and profiling support with all GretagMacbeth devices (EyeOne, Isis, etc). That's good news for many of you that have asked about this recently. Since XRite's linearization is chroma based you'll still want to have a UV filter for the best results.
