One thing that you can do is purchase it through a supplier like Enovation. If it arrives DOA then it is their problem and not yours. Find a company that stands behind the products they sell even if they arent the ones that manufacture it.

I posted a similar question a few months back, and think I got only one
response, and it was positive. However, based on our phone chat yesterday, I
would say the iO units are very unreliable. After only a few months of use,
(and very VERY finicky months at that), one of the clips that holds the
spectro in place snapped, making the unit unusable (X-Rite wanted $150 to
even just open the box cause they wouldn't send me a replacement part), and
yesterday the unit completely failed. Support requested I RMA the POS (piece
of shit) and get a replacement unit.
Roger just got a brand new one direct from Europe, and his arrived DOA. Of a
sample of two, both defective, I'd say there are definite QA issues with the
iO.

When they work, they are superb - but that's the catch. A number of my
findings that help them work under Mac OS X 10.4.x:
1) If you have a Wacom tablet, unplug it as the iO will not work when the
Wacom is present.
2) The electrostatic pad is nice, but only works for very light substrates.
Tape the corners of each target, pulling snug and taping as you go.
3) Shield the table from any ambient light. I have found that if you're
running the unit in a bright room, the ambient light will affect results,
especially on textured papers. A few black cards do the trick.
4) Re-boot and try different combinations of un-plugging and plugging in
power / USB cables.
Eventually the iO will behave and you'll be off - just don't breath near it.
My unit was shipped off yesterday to my dealer who will get a replacement
unit somehow. My unit was about 8 months old. We'll see if the replacement
is any better - and hopefully they don't ship me Roger's old one! LOL
Good luck!
