Belinda,
To add to what Steve and Graeme said, even if you had two
tubes (of different manufacturers) both giving a "perfect"
D50 reading, the visual appearance could (in fact usually
will) be different since these tubes are manufactured from
different "studied mixes" of various phosphors which all
have emission peaks of more or less bandwidth (more or
less peaked) located at different wavelengths.
These wavelength peaks will affect specific colors and the
visual match will vary according to the colors contained
in the actual print.
Because of the above, I recommend that you use a single
brand of tubes for your work.
For additional reading, I suggest a small study on
illumination that Roger Breton and I made last year:

As for the i1 precision, a GMB spec mention a typical +/-
250 K value for the I1 Display 2. From experience with
various units, I would say you get about the same or
slightly better accuracy for the i1 Pro.

Hi All
I have had donated to me a Just viewing light, of
indeterminable age and
model. It is a quite large overhead viewing light, which
takes 60 inch
tubes. I was also given with it a box of new graphiclite
d50 tubes. I have
replaced the tubes with the new ones, but still the
colour temperature of
this light is up around 5800k.
I was wondering if anyone has much experience in how
viewing lights work,
and what the problem could be. My theories thus far are:
Does it matter that it is a Just box, but I have
graphiclite tubes in it?
Should the brand of tubes match the manufacturer, or
should it not make a
difference considering they are both colour correct
tubes? As far as the
actual tubes are concerned, are they the only thing that
affects colour
temperature, or does the actual electrical appliance¹s
power output also
affect the resulting colour temperature (hence my theory
about matching tube
& light manufacturer)?
Does the height from the bench affect colour
temperature? I am assuming that
it would only affect illuminance levels. We have a
number of GTI lights,
which are performing well as far as illuminance &
temperature are concerned,
and this light has been hung at around the same specs as
our GTI lights,
except that it had to be brought further forward of the
bench, as it throws
the light back further.
Or do they just get to an age where they¹re just past it
& it¹s time to
throw them out?
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks, Bee
