I am just getting involved with our Digital Print Group here at

and was wondering what sort of results to expect in dealing with a
Xerox 2060. It has the CreoScitex CSX2000 RIP on it. We want them to
mimic our offset presses as closely as possible. Is it as simple as
putting our offset press profile in the CMYK emulation tab and that is
it? I know they calibrate before every job. What has the groups
experience been with this device, and are there any sage words of
wisdom on things to look out for? Thanks in advance for your responses.
One problem you may encounter is that you may have little choice when
it comes to the CMM or engine that handles the conversion and rendering
intents. Printing from an application will give you this option, but
you will not be using the emulation function of the RIP in this case.
The "as closely as possible" part is something that would be
interesting to hear about from the Creo/Xerox folks, especially with
regard to delta e expectations. Visually, you might get fair or
acceptable agreement, but agreement between measurements is another
thing altogether (not that measurements are everything).
It beats nothing at all, but toner devices can be difficult to keep
stable. They are workhorses, designed to crank out work more or less
continuously. Proofers are more stable. As a test, you could measure
a target sheet that is printed after each calibration to see what kind
of consistency it is achieving. At least you can find out if it is
worth pursuing. If it is, then test some jobs to see how your press
operators react to them with real jobs. If the nature of print work
the shop typically does makes it easy for them to match the toner
proof, well, then you will have accomplished your goal. On the other
hand, if the print work is more demanding, and involves higher
expectations than the toner device *can* deliver, it won't matter if
the press can match it or not.
