Boy, it figures. After multiple attempts to calibrate a 4-year old
Sony Artisan, including manual calibration using GMG Match and an i1,
I gave up and bought a new Eizo CG-210, figuring the Artisan had run
its last lap. After getting the Eizo set up and calibrated, I moved
the Artisan to our print station, thinking it could still replace an
ancient Radius PressView 21 SR that has incredible barrel distortion,
but has served its purpose well. After hooking up the Artisan as a
dumb monitor - no USB feedback cable, and no Artisan puck, I tried to
calibrate it using Match and my i-1 Pro. It initially looked dismal
(the blacks looked gray) - but after going through all the On Screen
Display menus, some of which I swear are not there when the USB
cable is connected, I hit something that reset and re-calibrated the
electronics. Suddenly the background current dropped and the "gray"
background was reduced to black, as it should be. I was
dumbfounded. I continued to calibrate with Match, then re-configured
the Artisan with the USB cable and puck, installed Artisan 1.2.5
software, and ran my usual calibration: D65, 500:1, L* gamma. You
guessed it - it calibrated just fine. I now have a great new Eizo -
as well as a resuscitated Artisan. The lesson, from my perspective,
is that before you give up on an Artisan, unplug everything and go
through all the OSD menus and reset the works. Sometimes it works.
I'll be mailing my Eizo back to (really great price) Chromix. Just
kidding! I'm getting used to the Eizo and I like the additional
screen real estate. The Radius needed to go.
