I've been printing out targets for various papers on my 3800. I was
using a setting of 2880 (hi-speed off) on all of them until I printed on
Epson's new Ultra Premium Presentation Paper Matte (fka: Enhanced
Matte), when the ink in saturated areas buckled the paper, allowing the
print head to plow furrows through the emulsion.
Albeit, without similar problems, I had printed out test charts on Epson
Ultra Smooth Fine Art, Hanhnamuhle Photo Rag, Photo Rag Bright White,
Photo Rag Satin & Art Duo, and the Moab Entradas at 2880 as well. If
you take the attitude of the-driver-knows-best, when selecting any of
Epson's matte papers (with the exception the cheaper ones) the print-
driver offers you the choice of 2880. The only caveat to this is that,
as of yet, there is no selection for the new Ultra Premium Presentation
Paper Matte. Question: Are there advantages (greater saturation) or
disadvantages (detail loss due to ink spread) to using 2880 on matte papers?
Ultra Premium Presentation Paper Matte? Is this just marketing, or has
Epson improved their Enhanced Matte (fka: Archival Matte)? On the front
& sides of the EUPPPM box there is a new star rating - 5 Star, in this
case - and on the back, an explanation. 3 Star for everyday, 4 Star
for "photos to share and photo albums", and 5 Star, which is reserved
for "professional quality, long lasting photos for framing, and special
occasions". The 4 & 5 Star papers now carry a "Premium" or "Ultra
Premium" designation, respectively, as a prefix to the paper name.
Elevated into the "Ultra", 5 Star category are Ultra Premium Photo Paper
Glossy, Ultra Premium Photo Paper Luster, and Ultra Premium Presentation
Matte. Question: Enhanced Matte = Ultra Premium Presentation Matte or no?
One matte paper that I wouldn't shy away from printing at 2880 is the
new Harmon Matt FB Mp. It has the most remarkably smooth finish that I
have seen on any paper - it's quite impressive - however I noticed, when
writing on it with a mechanical pencil, that when scratched, the
emulsion does chip away in tiny flecks. Something that I have not
noticed with any other paper.
One last question.... Has the CS mail been extremely slow lately, a
message or two per day, or did I get bumped into list-Limbo while I was
gone for a week.
