Maybe you could post your test image first somewhere ?
I routinely print box after box of test sheets, unfortunately it's the
hidden cost of profile equipment testing, and so one more set of
prints to run off on my 2400 really doesn't frigthen me. Also, that
way I could insult to injury and run it off on Gutenprint too :)

Last night I took one paper, Epson's Premium Glossy, and printed an
image with the 3800 at 1440, 1440 HS, 2880, 2880 HS, and, for the heck
of it, 2880 finest detail, which I understand is for graphic (vector) files.

I would not be so quick to jump to this conclusion. Under a loupe, my
observations were to the contrary, although it is an eye fatiguing
exercise to tell the difference. The 2880 is sharper than the 2880 HS
which is sharper than the 1440 which is sharper than the 1440 HS, but if
you looked at the prints from a normal, or even close viewing distance,
I doubt that you could distinguish between them.
Here's what I'd like to do. If I could get a list of names that would
like to see these examples, I'll put together a chain-mail of sorts, so
that you could examine them and pass them on. The image is quite
detailed. It is a 4x5 TX scanned on an Imacon at full rez, and then
down-sampled slightly to print 17 x 22 at 360 ppi. Before printing, I
ran PG's PhotoKit sharpener on it at 360 glossy. The actual print is
only an 8.5 x 11 part of the image. I will also get a detailed image
from a friend's H2/P45, repeat the process, and include that as well.
Any takers?
Tony
