In my previous message, I brought up scanner profiles as an example of input
profiles, though Edmund was talking of camera profiles, which are yet
another type of input profile.
It was my mistake to have overlooked that detail. But the general point
remains, and the mechanism is the same for all input profiles: they only
work in one direction -- from the source data to the PCS -- to assign a
device-independent appearance (described in XYZ or Lab coordinates in an
internal LUT) to the RGB data generated by the camera or scanner.
My apologies for the slight confusion.
