Go to the following URL:
<http://www.gracol.org/resources/datasetdownload.asp>
Enter the required information, then proceed to the download page and get
the data sets.
Once you have those 3 data sets ("SWOP2006_Coated5.txt",
"SWOP2006_Coated3.txt", and "GRACoL2006_Coated1.txt"), start the Printer
module in ProfileMaker. Drag and drop any one of the three data sets from
the Finder onto the ProfileMaker dialog box. That action populates both the
Reference Data and the Measurement Data portions of PM's Printer module.
Incidentally, the datasets are colorimetric only, not spectral, which means
that the "Correct for Optical Brightener" checkbox will remain grayed out,
and will not be usable.
You can then proceed to set your profile-making parameters in the usual way:
Profile Size, intent, Gamut Mapping, and Separation Parameters.

You won't need information on dot gain (Tonal Value Increase, or TVI): the
profile will take care of that aspect, without user intervention.
Black generation can be whatever you desire it to be: Light, Medium or High
GCR, etc. It all depends on your comfort level with neutral levels in the
images, and how much of an "insurance" you wish to build for yourself to
protect them with higher amounts of black ink and lower amounts of chromatic
inks.
In ProfileMaker you can also decide where to set the Black Start (which
controls the presence of black ink in the highlights) and the Black Width
(which modulates the presence of black ink in chromatic color mixes -- max
Black Width is usually a good choice).
If your profile is meant to be used with images that are going to be printed
on commercial presses, you should make sure that your print shop does indeed
meet GRACoL aimpoints (the underlying press conditions that the GRACoL data
sets are supposed to reflect), or else the results specified in the profile
will not be achieved in the actual press run.
Regarding Maximum Black and Total Ink Limit (TIL, a.k.a., Total Area
Coverage, or TAC): you should ask your separators to give you their
preferred values for maximum black and total ink. You could theoretically
specify any number in the Separation parameters inside ProfileMaker, but
that is risky, because only certain values will work for your specific
situation, while others won't. In my opinion, the TAC range should be
somewhere between 290 and 320% for any of the three profiles. But, whatever
TAC you end up specifying, you need a commitment from the printer to meet it
on press.
By the way, you can also download 3 *ready-made* GRACoL profiles from:
<http://www.gracol.org/resources/iccaccept.asp>
All 3 profiles have a 100% maximum black; the "GRACoL2006_Coated1v2.icc"
profile has a 320 TAC, the other two have 300.
