- The Overview -
At our university we have about 300 MACs on 3 year leases in the
student labs for the creative arts schools and colleges. As they have
been coming up for replacement, some of our labs were starting to lease
the white version 20 inch and 24 inch iMAcs [1]. The iMacs were
replacing the old dual processor G5's in LABs that still needed hi
Quality image display, but didn't need the processing power of a MAC
PRO.
One of my roles at the university is evaluating 'display quality' for
monitors the university intends to lease and make recommendations.
Looking at the new silver iMAC's display, I noticed that the image
contrast changes dramatically with small changes of vertical viewing
angle.
Even If they are profiled, the contrast issue makes them unsuitable for
our graphic display / image editing work station requirements (ie all
Mac labs).
I have recommended that our university cease leasing iMacs. I am
warning our photography students not to buy them for the same reasons.
- Our Universities Problem -
To get a the quality display we need for our universities MAC fleet, we
now find ourselves choosing between a MAC PRO or a MAC mini running an
ACD simply to get the display quality we need. We are looking into the
costs of running silver iMACs but with an ACD as a dual monitor set up
- and just using the iMAC display as a pallets monitor.
Understandably our IT department is not happy with with these choices.
Our IT department are are saying that this is making supporting a mac
fleet an even harder proposition to sell to the powers that be.
- Questions -
Are there any plans for a mid price range MAC with the same display
quality as the old white 17 and 20 in iMacs? [1]

[1] The 24 inch white iMac was the first MAC flat panel display that I
could not properly profile. At 'zero' brightness on the brightness
slider some of the 24 inch iMac displays were still running at 180 cdm.
Their contrast was stable with viewing angle.
