One simple "visual" test I like to perform -- often do this with the
students in my class or at a client -- is to compare a Lab image of a
ColorChecker chart to a real, physical one (custom measured if you're so
inclined). TIFF Lab version of the ColorChecker chart are easy to find on
the Internet (Lindbloom, BabelColor, Imatest, MCSL, RIT, ...). You can
customize the Lab values to your own unique ColorChecker chart but the
averages found on BabelColor, if I recall, were very good.
Of course, care must be paid to the quality of light illuminating the
physical chart but, when this is done right, in my experience, this simple
method is a good indication of what to expect.
