You keep referring to a "custom filter", but technically nothing like this is needed. The display colorant wavelengths are known and fixed - all that's needed is a different RGB->XYZ calibration matrix in the instrument EEProm, something far easier than manufacturing filters and fitting them to a device. That's primarily the difference between "CRT" and "LCD" with these sorts of instruments.

Given a reference instrument and appropriate software
(easy enough to write), it wouldn't be too hard to re-program
an Eye-One Display or Huey to be set for higher accuracy with
any particular display.
