Yup - the arithmetic is correct, but I wonder about implementation. On the face of it you're right - why can't they just change, for example the curves dialog, from 256 discrete increments to a great many more? The fact they haven't done it yet suggests one of two things: there hasn't been much demand for it (a situation we can change), or it's a bit more involved under the hood than it seems on the surface. Worth exploring with Adobe.
