Has anybody heard, that some RGB printer drivers for Mac OS X can only work with 6 Bit (in words six !!) per channel ?
At tests with a colleague, I have significantly better profiling results on driving an A3 photoprinter from the PC instead from the Mac OS X 10.4.11.

Various tests over the years on a variety of printers have not led to the same conclusion. You'll have to specify with what printer you have had these results.
