Have you compared the appearance of your converted images in, say, InDesign
or Illustrator? If the converted images are indeed dark, as a consequence of
something wrong with the conversion, then it should maintain its appearance
throughout the CS apps. If the appearance is indeed maintained though, that
may give you a hunch that there is something wrong with how the CMYK color
space interacts with your monitor profile.  Since you say that the
interaction between sRGB or AdobeRGB and your monitor profile is correct.
