I'm just guessing here, but perhaps it has something to do with getting the hardware to respond in a meaningful way to the higher bit-depth. Sure, it's easy to throw in a 12-bit LUT, but without the higher-end and more expensive manufacturing methods, I wonder if a 12-bit LUT would be any more effective than an 8-bit LUT. In other words, is the physical response of typical monitors 12-bit addressable? I don't really know either way--just putting the idea up for discussion...
