Not true. icclib was released in 1998, and Argyll was released in
2000, so open source and free color software has been available for
quite some time.
I'm not familiar with icclib, but the last time I tried it Argyll
was rather difficult to build (as I recall -- this was several years
ago -- it required a non-standard build tool that itself required a
good bit of configuration itself). At least in part as a result, it
never got much uptake by distributors, which made it impractical to
use.
