I need to work out the total number of unique colours in some TIFF

this? Or, better still, some code that can do achieve this using Core
Image or Quartz Composer?
The old OS9 app Levels 1.2 by Bruce Lindbloom will do this, but it's
not command-line driven, and Bruce has no plans to release an OSX
version. It works with grayscale, RGB, CMYK, Lab or PhotoYCC (i.e.
Photo CD) color types. and both 8 and 16-bit files. LZW not supported.
