Rick:
In the
end, the 1964 Civil Rights Act was passed. And there is little debate
about which approach was most effective in changing the minds of the
entrenched racists in Congress.
MLK's tactics included a lot of law breaking, let's not forget.
Peaceful, non-violent "law breaking" to show how violent the
oppressors were was his effective tactic. There was no negotiating
with Bull Conner and his ilk. Let's not forget those who were murdered
trying to "negotiate", like Medgar Evers (1925-1963). There were
serious consequences to "negotiation" then. MLK was not dealing with
reasonable people.
The greater debate between the tactics of MLK and Malcolm X came
later, when the cities were burning, a destructive war was raging in
Vietnam, and MLK and RFK were assassinated, as was Malcolm X (in
1965). You may be thinking Black Panthers vis-à-vis violent tactics.
Malcolm was a militant leader, but who basically promoted economic
self reliance for African Americans. Both he and MLK were a reaction
to different life experiences, and both were valid theories at the
time. That history is a little too complex to generalize as much as
you did, IMHO.
I generally concur with Marco's and Andrew's views on this derailed
discussion.
Well, it's all context. It's all the same package. You couldn't read
the black type on this screen if it weren't for its white background.
They go together. You can't divorce one from the other.
I'm happy for these brief forays into the larger scheme of things.
Especially if you make your living from some facet of color, it all
interrelates. It's technical, it's political, it's the whole ball of
wax that makes it real and that makes color science what it is today.
We couldn't be talking online like this without a whole lot of
scientific, political and economic forces and coincidences happening.
That's why it's not OT to me. : >)
Thanks for bringing MLK, etc., to mind and into the color-sync
discussion. I enjoy his memory and life example, too.
best,
don
