DNG files are typically smaller than the original raw files, that's
a plus.
So are the compressed raw files that Nikon cameras produce and zipped
raw files (and as far as I know these two compression techniques are
more less documented).
DNG files contain all the metadata instructions which means I don't
have to
worry about sidecar files getting lost or separated from the raws.
If you are talking about IPTC data, I would agree. If you are talking
rendering instructions, I don't think it is (yet) possible to create
a standard for rendering instructions. A saturation increase of 10%
will have a different effect with different raw decoder algorithm.
Check Aperture, even the same instructions will produce different
results whether you use the 1.0 or 1.1 rendering code.
It is certainly possible to create a definition of rendering
instructions but for other raw decoders to use this definition might
mean to being not able use their own creative ideas about raw decode
should be done.
After you
build metadata instructions, its handy to keep it embedded with the
raw
data, along with a JPEG of the rendering should you wish to share
this with
others. Oh, having the JPEG for printing without having to fully
render the
image is useful too.
I am trying to think of a situation where that would be useful. Say I
work on a raw file and then want to give the work to a colleague who
wants to continue improving things. In Aperture I would export the
project for this. For printing I need a rendered image at a
sufficient resolution, so which size should be embedded with the raw?
Oh, having a wrapper that is documented isn't a bad
idea.
To summarize:
- Having a wrapper that compresses the file (similar to .docx etc.)
might be a good idea, however could be implemented in the camera
right away (now if the manufacturers could agree on a standard there).
- Having a wrapper for the IPTC data would certainly be welcome.
- Having a wrapper for a low resolution jpeg (limited usefulness)
- Having a wrapper for the instructions, would be the ideal solution.
I don't think this is possible (yet).
Cheers,
Markus
