It's ProPhoto RGB primaries with an sRGB tone curve (Melissa RGB aka Bastard
RGB).
Since at this point, the image is output referred, it seems a better option
than the linear encoded histogram which for most users would look quite odd.
To that point, I prefer how CR handles the Histogram and numbers. You select
the encoding color space of which there are four options (three in LR), the
numbers and histogram now produce what you'll get when you render the image.
In LR, its a bit more complex because you have any number of export presets
you can make (but using just three encoding color spaces). Plus you have
options when you ask to Open in External Editor. CR's numbers also use a
zero-255 scale, LR zero to 100%. I can work with either but I like CR's
ability to show the numbers I'll get once the image opens in Photoshop.
>From a ease of use standpoint, I'm not sure how LR could allow us to see the
numbers and histogram based on the output easily. I may have one export
preset for sRGB, JPEG, 8-bit, another for Adobe RGB (1998) 16-bit and I may
have an Open in External Editor setting of ProPhoto RGB in 16-bit. How's LR
to know what to show me? I guess I could option click on the Histogram and
ask it to base itself on one of the three possible encoding spaces (that at
this point would be my ideal solution).
The biggest issue I have with LCD previews is I can't use the Expose to the
Right technique to get the best data in the linear raw capture without
making the preview look awful. The LCD is really useful for lots of work.
The clipping is equally wrong, depending on the camera model. I've playing
around with different in camera presets for JPEG to see if I can get closer
clipping indication of what the raw will provide. But ultimately, it would
be great to have a raw setting on the camera that provided a clipping based
on the actual raw data so I could expose as close to clipping without
clipping. The JPEG clipping indictors can be a good 1 stop off from actual
raw clipping. And a LCD preview that isn't blown out such I can't see what I
just shot.
