Markus,
1) DNG combines the original raw data, IPTC data and jpeg previews into
one file and compresses the data somewhat.
2) DNG might reformat the raw data to present them in a standardized way.
3) DNG provides decoding information (in my view some kind of camera
profiling) that some raw decoders use and others not (either because
their algorithm cannot make use of that information or they prefer to do
the camera 'profiling' themselves)
4) DNG can store rendering instructions
1) So do nefs
2) No need to
3) So do nefs
4) So do nefs
So where's the gain in using dng? 3rd-party software can read them if they
want to. QImage currently uses Dave Coffin's dcraw to render raw files. No
problem so far. So if Nikon goes bust, all is not lost. If Dave Coffin can
understand the nefs, so can some other people I'm sure. And Nikon has
provided the nef decoding software for any firm that wants it. So that's
there for posterity, for any software writer who wants to use it.
Bob Frost.
