Being as PI is the only photographic organisation with an anti-RF
stance, I'd suggest that we are the only game in town where RF is
actually challenged! Other organisations, like the SAA, have been
left looking like complete hypocrites as their members undermined
their stated position by becoming increasingly involved in RF.
That is why it is important that ground rules are made very clear on
the PI site. You can look at RF. You can get involved in RF. But once
you choose to join PI you have to end your involvement with RF.
If you are interested, and prepared to entertain an RF-free
lifestyle, then you don't need to pay up front. Prospective members
get a free trial and the membership fee is peanuts.
Jeff made the following point:
That dog don't hunt bud...yes, RF is having a real negative impact
on the
income of assignment and RM photographers, that don't do RF. But it's
neither the fault of the stock industry nor Adobe that has brought
this
about. It's other photographers. And until the photographic
industry comes
to grips with the reality that photographers are ruining the
photographic
industry, nothing will change for the better.
I'm sure that the members of Pro Imaging would be delighted to debate
this with him at length - so that was my reason for extending a
personal invitation for him to make his points at the PI site.
On the matter of "paying to join", PI is a non-profit organisation
and the fees are spent in promoting the work of members. To make my
position clear, I am one of the three founders and provide the
servers, list administration and site programming for a nominal fee.
Along with the other admins I also spend countless hours helping
members with any issues relating to professional image making.
Our reason for donating so much time to the project is that we are
opposed to Jeff's view of photographers. The nature of the
photographic business means that photographers are easy to divide and
exploit. An organisation devoted to disseminating knowledge means
individuals get some additional choices and a chance to think about
and question issues like the RF economic model.
