It's not correct to say these effects are somehow caused by a Lab PCS. They aren't,
it's just a device independent colorspace for defining colors. Some of the effects
you mention are caused by applications gamut mapping and gamut clipping in the Lab
colorspace. The two things are not necessarily connected. An application dealing
with ICC profiles must deal with two possible PCS spaces, XYZ or D50 L*a*b*. But
it can then transform color values into any color space it likes to do gamut
mapping and clipping, for instance CIECAM02, etc. (and will almost certainly
convert to some other colorspace for an XYZ PCS!)
