Rich,
The interest in printing overseas? The reason is primarily cost. Probably
80% - 90% of the fine art, photography, illustrated books, children's books,
etc...are printed overseas. Publishers would all be going out of business if
they had to pay the costs that U.S. and European printers/prepress charged.
A typical coffee table book that might retail for $49-$69 (wholesale to the
bookstores about half that), would cost about $15 to print in the U.S. Add
to that their prepress cost, design costs, editing, marketing, etc...and
they would go out of business. The same book might only cost about $4-$5 to
print in Asia. Same presses, binding equipment, etc...but cheaper labor,
materials, etc...In fact, even though they purchase paper pulp from Canada,
Europe, and the U.S., they make their own paper from our pulp and can charge
much less for paper too.
I would love to be able to print in the U.S. I got started in the printing
business in the U.S. 35 years ago, but have been printing overseas now for
nearly 25 years. We have no choice if we are to offer our clients the best
quality for the best prices.
Regards,
Bob Rock
Why the interest in printing in the far east?
