To go back to the subject of digital data viability through time, I just ran
into this online article, which may be of interest to many in this list:
"Warning of data ticking time bomb"
BBC, Tuesday, 3 July 2007
<http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/technology/6265976.stm>
This particular piece has a lot to do with Microsoft's proclaimed "efforts"
to tackle this task, but the issues it raises transcend any one particular
company, and make it plain that what is needed is an industry-wide
commitment to digital file preservation -- whose implications, in my
opinion, are barely starting to be perceived in their proper light and
importance, and certainly do greatly affect the future of digital imaging as
well.
