Tried posting this yesterday, but it looks like it did not make the list. Lets try again....

How about melamine coated particle board from Home Depot? It comes in 4'x8' sheets and they will cut it down to smaller sizes if needed. It will resist dents and scratches. I don't recall the texture, I think it has a semi-matte finish.
