Keep in mind that InDesign can output from placed PDFs as well.
I agree an RI interface in the print dialog for documents contaning stricly
TIFFs, PSDs, EPSs, JPEGs and a few others could have merit on its own.
But placed contents from PDFs means nightmare for color management because a
PDF is a self-contained entity, with potentially myriads of sources profiles
but one output intent (that many to one relationship).
It may not be as complicated as I make it sound in practice for the InDesign
engineers to implement a RI in the Print dialog but I find the current
approach to work well in CS, CS2 and now CS3.
BTW, any image in the document can be selected and its embedded profile
overridden in one of two ways: globally, at re-open time, in the profile
mismatch dialog, or selectively, while the document is opened with
right-clicking.
Sorry if I came across being mean to Scott earlier -- that's not my style at
all.
