Hi,
I'm developing a photo gallery/database web app, and have the problem of
wanting to display a couple of hundred color-correct sRGB thumbnails on a
page without having to embed an sRGB ICC profile in each one. Given each
thumbnail is around 5Kb (without profile), and the HP sRGB ICC is around
3Kb, I'm trying to avoid spending almost half my bandwidth transferring
redundant information around.
My main reason for specifying a profile for the thumbnails in the first
place is to ensure that Safari displays them correctly - as otherwise on a
default 1.8 gamma OS X install the images are noticeably and
disappointingly bleached out. I was hoping that I'd be able to work
around this by setting the EXIF ColorSpace tag to 1 (and
InteroperabilityIndex to R98, and InteroperabilityVersion to 0100) - but
it seems that Safari does not appear to honour this, and instead requires
an explicit sRGB ICC profile to be embedded.
The guys on #webkit suggest that color management in safari is all
magically done by ColorSync, and so I'm asking here if anyone can suggest
how to persuade Safari to interpret the JPEG as expressed in sRGB -
without having to waste bandwidth by embedding the profile? Or is there a
way to simply specify a blunt desired display gamma in a JPEG which Safari
will uphold?
thanks hopefully,
Matthew.
