I see at least two separate ways to answer that question:
1) Objectively: Certain devices are simply more accurate than others in their performance
-- by which I mean that the values that they detect and report are closer to the
"real" ones as detected by a highly specialized device (say, a spectroradiometer).
I form an opinion on the accuracy of these devices both from personal experience
and from the feedback of other professionals whom I know and respect. I consider
the Spyder to be the least accurate of the ones I have used over the years, and
(this is my personal opinion) the Optix XR to be the most accurate. The EyeOne Display
2 is a very respectable choice too. (Note: the Optix XR has been discontinued, but
some retailers still have units left in stock. Disclaimer: I have no direct or indirect
financial interest in XRite products or those of its retailers, affiliates or rivals.)
2) Subjectively: The other way to answer the question is to see whether or not a
chosen device provides results that are satisfactory to a particular user. Not all
users desire or need top-notch results, and for them a Spyder or a Huey may do a
"good enough" job. Different strokes.
