Thanks for your assessment, Kevin.
I just got an email from Onyx a week ago that they're
discontinuing US support for version 6.5 as of April 1.
However, the big reason we're looking into bundling the upgrade
(or a new RIP) with the printer at this time is that it will come out
of the capital budget instead of our operating budget if we have to
upgrade later.

Frankly, I'd keep the ONYX RIP! The 6.5
version is excellent and I've achieved incredible results on fine art
canvas, architectural bond, artist watercolor and outdoor banner
material and of course it's compatible with the HP5500. If you want to
spend a little dough, then an upgrade to the newest ONYX RIP should be
very price competitive. After working with several major RIPs on the
market (and a few not so major RIPs) my personal favorite for highest
quality and ease of use is ONYX hands down.
