I have a
need to shrink some existing profiles to include them in PDF files

doable but I'm wondering if anyone has any suggestions. The idea would
be to remove any non-critial tags from the
profile.
What tags,
if any, could be considered non-critical and how would one go about
removing them?
Some of the
profiles were created some time ago and were edited, so simply
recreating them with different settings is not
practical.
For the best reference you should use the ICC spec available at
color.org... but it can be a bit challenging to read. It will,
however, show you exactly which tags are required in each profile type
- there are a number more profile types than people expect
though...
Our ColorThink Pro will also list all profile tags AND allow you
to delete them (or drag them from one profile to another for
FrankenProfiles)...
CT Pro also shows which tags are optional, etc but it may not be
the most authoritative source... BUT the listing of Tags does specify
which are private tags and which are not. For most uses (ie not with a
custom CMM that will support private tags) you can delete all private
tags to no color processing detriment. Beware that some profiles may
not be editable in certain editors once this is done -ie Monaco
profiles in their editor require a certain private tag. But if the
edited profiles are only for distribution then it shouldn't ba an
issue.
Also, there are certain ICC-registered tags that contain
reference and measurement data that you can delete a free up a fair
amount of space. Look for the 'CIED' and 'DEVD' tags in ProfileMaker
profiles and 'targ' tags in other profiles.
Hope this helps...

Steve
