Liz,
The last ones I bought were in Sept.-Oct 2005 and they started getting
blotchy in August of 2006. These replaced the clear lucite bezel 20" cinema
displays that we had in use since mid-2002. Those lasted about 3 1/4 years
before luminance became nearly too low for the workflow. They never
displayed the blotchyness that the newer displays have shown. I calibrated
them to 5300K at 130 CD/m2
In my opinion, the current 20" Cinema displays when used day in and day out
should give you at least 3 years of useful service for serious softproofing
before they would need to be migrated to secondary uses (i.e. Editorial
desktops) that is unless the dreaded pink blotches arrive to spoil the fun.
I have heard that ICS ColorEyes/Remote Director has a calibration mode that
creates a more uniform display by calibrating in multiple 1-2" zones across
the screen. This might keep some displays in service longer.
All this depends on your expectations, your luminance settings and work
environment; your results may vary.
